Navigating in Course Content

The Course Content displays the different types of content your instructors can add to the courses.

For example:

· Assessments

· Discussions

· Documents

All of your course content appears in the main part of the page. When you open a piece of content, it slides out in a layer on top of the Course Content page. Close layers to navigate back to a previous spot in your course.

When accessing modules:

When a module is visible, students can also view all visible content within the module, including due dates. Students can open and access the content in any order.

Content Sequence

If you force a content sequence, a message appears. Students are told that they need to open and complete the content in order, along with other conditions you set.

After students open a content item, they can navigate through the module with the arrows at the top of the browser window. When students are required to access the content in order, a lock appears next to the arrow.

Students can exit the module before completion. When students return, icons appear next to the module content if the sequence is enforced. The icons show which content is complete, in process, and not started, so students can pick up where they left off.

A green circle with a check mark means that content is complete. A partially filled green circle means the content is in process. A lock icon means the content hasn’t been started.

On June 1, 2020, Humber College launched Blackboard Ally in all courses. This allow students to click on documents in the course and download alternative versions of them. This is available in both the desktop/web browser versions of Blackboard and the Blackboard App.

Ally provides alternative formats for these file types:

  • PDF files.
  • Microsoft® Word files.
  • Microsoft® Powerpoint® files.
  • OpenOffice/LibreOffice files.
  • Uploaded HTML files.

These alternative formats can be generated:

  • OCR’d version (for scanned documents).
  • Tagged PDF (currently for Word, Powerpoint and OpenOffice/LibreOffice files).
  • Mobile-friendly HTML.
  • Audio (MP3 file).
  • ePub.
  • Electronic Braille (.brf).
  • BeeLine Reader.

How do I download the files?

  1. Log into your course and find the file you want.
  2. Open the file menu by clicking on the A after the name of the file.
  3. Choose a format.

Why do I see “The alternative formats for this file have been disabled”?

Instructor and administrators can turn off alternative formats for an individual content item within a course. For example, on a file uploaded to the course.

For Blackboard App
