To get the best out of your live sessions, here are some suggestions when joining a session  in the course through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra.

Before starting a session

  • Use a hard-wired (Ethernet) connection, if available. If not available, use a Wifi connection. If using Wifi, try to be as close to the router as possible.
  • Close other programs. Close all programs and streaming services on your computer except for the browser you are using for your Collaborate session.
  • Keep your browser current. Only use up-to-date Internet browsers that are supported by Blackboard Collaborate. Best for Collaborate is Google Chrome.
  • Make sure that your browser is allowing Blackboard. Here is how to enable cookies
  • Limit video use. Use video during the session only when necessary.
  • Use supported mobile browsers. If on a mobile device, use a supported mobile browser.
  • Use headphones. Cut down on the background noise and use headphones.
  • Disable Adblockers. Browser Adblockers can turn off your audio and video and can cause buttons to not show up.

When starting a session

  • Mute yourself when not speaking. Nothing is more distracting than background noise. For example, typing or a private conversation. It can also give the impression that you aren’t paying attention. It can also disrupt the speaker and make it hard to hear the person who is speaking for the rest of the class.
  • Turn off video when entering a room. It may not be required during the session.
  • Be professional. You may be joining the session from somewhere private but you are not alone. You are face-to-face with your peers, instructors, and guest experts. Make a good impression. Participate. Don’t talk over someone. Raise your hand if there is no opening to speak. Type questions and feedback in the chat.

After joining a Blackboard Collaborate Ultra webinar, there are a number of actions you can perform to actively participate in the webinar provided that the permissions for those actions are enabled by your instructor. Sending chat messages is one of the most common actions that you can perform in the webinar provided that the chat permissions are enabled by your instructor.

  1. Once you have joined a Blackboard Collaborate Ultra session, click on the white action arrow at the bottom right corner of the screen.
    Collaborate tab
  2. This will open the chat screen where you can view previous messages sent by other classmates or your instructor.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, type your message in the textbox that reads “Say something…” and press the Enter key on your keyboard to send the chat message.
